Mountain biking from Lhasa to Kathmandu
This is an ultimate biking expedition across the roof of the world
traversing the road between Lhasa and Kathmandu. This is For bikers
with an adventurous spirit who appreciate spending a little more
time experiencing this vast landscape at a closer and more personnal
level.

This expedition visits all the monasteries and places of interest
in the cities and towns but gives you the chance to ride the best,
most scenic sections of the Friendship Highway. Flying to Lhasa,
we allow 2 days for essential acclimatization in the mystical Tibetan capital time which
we spend exploring the numerous attractions, including the fabulous
Potala Palace.
Our overland route back to Kathmandu crosses major
passes and visits the spectacular monastery towns. Reaching the
edge of the Tibetan Plateau at the Thang La (5200m.), we begin the
longest descent in the world, 4600 meters to the valley of the Sun
Kosi River in Nepal. Two days of biking in the valley brings us
to Kathmandu.
Day 1: Depart for Kathmandu
Day 2: En route to Kathmandu
Day 3: Arrive in Kathmandu. We will be met at the airport by Pemba
Sherpa's Kathmandu staff who will escort us to our hotel. The group
is then free to explore Kathmandu or relax from the long trip.
Day 4: Kathmandu sightseeing. We have arranged for a private sightseeing
tour of the mystical city of Kathmandu that includes Buddhist shrines
of Swayambunath ( the famed Monkey Temple), and Bodhnath, as well
as the Hindu funeral pyres of Pashupatinath. The evening is free
to finish final packing arrangements.
DAY 5: Fly KTM to Lhasa. Drive to hotel and build up bikes.
DAY 6: Easy ride around Lhasa, to visit: - Norbulinka, Jokhang
and Sera Monasteries.
DAY 7: Visit Drepung monastery and Potala Palace. Rest of day free
to explore Lhasa.
DAY 8: Ride to the Chusul, 100% paved road. We follow the Lhasa
River all the way down.
Day 9: Drive to top of Khamba La, cycle down to and around Yamdruk
Lake to Nagatse.
DAY 10: Cycle or drive up Karo La and ride down to Gyantse.
DAY 11: Cycle down to Shigatse and visit Tashilhunpo Monastery.
DAY 12: Drive and cycle up to Lhatse.
Day 13: Cross the highest pass Gyatso La 5220m, today. Ride or
drive as much as you want to Xegar.
DAY 14: Climb Pang la for panoramic views of Everest, Cho Yu, and
the expanse of Tibet. We camp at Rongbuk.
DAY 15: Rest day in Rongbuk.
DAY 16: Visit base camp today and return to the base of Pang La
or visit the hot springs nearTingri.
DAY 17: Cycle over Pang La and along the valley to Tingri. or Gusto
further down the road.
DAY 18: Start descending the biggest down hill in the world from
the Tibetan Plateau down to Nyalam. .
DAY 19: Keep descending downhill into Nepal today. See trees appearing
and rivers grow. We cycle up to Dolalghat and then drive to a Hotel
in Dhulikhel.
DAY 20: Ride the last section from valley rim into Kathmandu via
Nala and Bhaktapur. Transfer to hotel and farewell dinner.
Day 21: Kathmandu.
Day 22-23: Kathmandu to USA.
Cycling Profile:
13 full days, 2 half days cycling rough, dirt and pot holed roads.
Non-technical mountain biking, averaging 45 to 65 Kms a day, mostly
flat, undulating or downhill! Clothing and Equipmen
In additional to personal gear, you should bring a sleeping bag
(0 rated bag), day pack and a large duffle bag with double zipper
that locks for all personal gear. You will be provided with a two-person
tent, full length foam sleeping pad, all commissary gear and eating/drinking utensils. All personal gear, camp stools, folding tables and dining tent are
carried by bus or jeep. Bikers carry only a day pack with water
bottles, camera, extra jacket and items you may need during the course of
the day. A full equipment list is available after signing up.Health
Immunizations will be necessary before leaving the USA. You and
your doctor are responsible for determining what is necessary for
you. All costs for evacuation, hospitalization and other medical
expenses are the responsibility of the individual involved.
Leadership
Pemba Tsering Sherpa will organize and lead this trip. He grew up
in the Khumbu and herded yaks in these Himalayan mountains as a
child. He has been a siddhar and guide throughout Nepal since 1986.
He has led this bike trip, and has led over 20 trips to Nepal for
the Colorado Mountain Club and the HEC , including Island Peak,
Lobuche Peak, Chulu East, and Ama Dablam. He has lived in the Denver,
Colorado since 1991, but spends three to four months a year guiding
trips in Nepal.
Qualifications
Participants should be strong, experienced biker in good physical
condition. You must have a willingness to undergo the hardships
of outdoor living and long days of biking, often at high altitude.
